Investigation the effect of time-passing on the properties of commercial TMC in thin film composite membrane preparation

Abstract:
Passing of time, preservation and transportation conditions are significant parameters on materials characteristics. Trimesoyl chloride (TMC) is one of the key functional monomers in polyamide (PA) selective layer preparation of thin film composite (TFC) membranes. Accordingly, in the present study, the effect of time-passing on the properties of commercial TMC was investigated. In this case, one of the monomers was used as received without further purification and the other one was used after period of time. The images of TMC/n-hexane solution displayed that TMC solubility reduced for old one due to its partial hydrolysis. Also, the performance of TFC membranes, which were prepared at the same conditions with both TMC was investigated through desalination of 2000 ppm NaCl solution (transmembrane pressure of 100 psig). The results showed that membrane performance parameters enhanced from 12 L.m-2.h-1 and 90 % for old monomer to 18 L.m-2.h-1 and 97.5% for new one.
