Medical application of membranes: A review

Abstract:
Medical application of membranes is one of the fast growing fields in membrane science and technology among which, treatment of end stage renal disease by hemodialysis is very important and has been focused by many researchers. This article reviews different types of medical membrane such as hemodialyzers and plasma filters that are used for fractionation of blood components. For this purpose, researches and developments that have been under taken by membrane scientists and manufacturers to produce a more biocompatible and permeable membrane is discussed. In addition the physical principles of mass transfer by diffusion and convection across the medical membranes are reviewed. Furthermore, medical membrane modules, their performance, optimizing their internal fluid mechanics and their geometry are also reviewed critically.
