Preparation of a nanocomposite chitosan membrane for BSA adsorption from aqueous solutions

Chitosan is a biopolymer has been applied in biomaterial, medicinal, environmental, and other industrial fields. In this study, chitosan-based nanocomposite membranes have been successfully prepared as adsorptive membrane by using TiO2 nanoparticles blending with chitosan for mechanical strength improvement of the membranes. Poly ethylene glycol used as pore formers. Cibacron blue F3GA were immobilized on the membranes as affinity ligand to improve adsorption selectivity of the membranes to BSA molecules as model protiens. FTIR spectrums of the chitosan membranes were prepared to investigate TiO2 nanoparticles trapping in the chitosan microstructure membranes. Dead-end module was used for permeability measurement. BSA adsorption efficiency of the membranes was obtained by static adsorption tests in a batch reactor. Also tensile strength of nanocomposite chitosan membranes was measured. Results showed that TiO2 nanoparticles could improve mechanical strength of chitosan nanocomposite membranes, properly. The prepared dye affinity membranes have been had high static adsorption efficiency of 96%. The prepared membranes have a good potential to use as affinity membranes in bioseparation processes.
