Pervaporation Performance of Poly (Vinyl Alcohol) Membrane Cross-Linked with Fumaric Acid used for Dehydration of Methanol Solutions

Cross-linked poly (vinyl alcohol) membranes were synthesized using fumaric acid as the cross-linking agent and were conducted for the pervaporation separation of binary water/methanol mixtures. Cross-linking process was performed at 150 ºC and at 60 min. The pervaporation process was carried out at 40 ºC .The membranes were characterized by known methods of FT-IR and SEM. Formation of ester groups during the cross-linking process was confirmed by the FT-IR results. The permeation fluxes of methanol aqueous solutions as a function of composition (5, 10, 15 and 20 wt. %) were evaluated. The maximum separation factor for PVA membrane cross-linked was found to be 71 for the feed mixture containing 5 wt. % of water.
