Investigation of preparation parameters on cellulose acetate membrane structures

Membrane technology has received tremendous importance in different industrial applications. The phase inversion method was used for the preparation of flat sheet cellulose acetate membranes. In this study, casting solutions were preparedby N, N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc) and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP)as different solvents. Also Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVPK30) and distilled water were used as a hydrophilic additive and coagulation bath respectively. The purpose of this investigation is considered the effect of preparation parameters: like as, Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVPK30) concentration and temperature of delay stage simultaneously that create alteration membrane morphologies. Effect of these parameters were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) as membrane characteristics. Membrane structures were changed from channel and finger-like to more spongy morphology by increasing PVPK30 concentration and temperature. So temperature of delay stage has an important role in the alteration of membrane morphologies. Of course, the results were different for solutions with various solvents and viscosity of solutions were introduced as an important factor that effected on membrane structures.
