Effect of delay time and relative humidity in coagulation process on the structure of PES membranes

The purpose of this research is to investigate the effect of delay time and relative humidity of delay stage before immersing the casted polymer solution into the coagulation bath on the structure of polyethersulfone prepared membranes. To achieve this purpose, membrane samples were fabricated with two concentrations of based polymer by different delay times and relative humidity before final phase inversion in coagulation bath. Distilled water was used as the non-solvent to coagulate the polymer solutions which are prepared by dissolving polyethersulfone in dimethylacetamide solvent. The resulted structures were investigated by scanning electron microscopy photographs. The results show that, with increasing the delay time, structure of the membranes was changed from channel-like with open channels to closed channels with more sponge-like structures. Also, more compact and spongy structures were formed by higher concentration of polymer. On the other hand, with increasing the relative humidity, the asymmetric structure of membrane samples was totally changed and membranes with completely symmetrical structures were obtained.
