Fabrication and performance evaluation of nanostructure ZrO2-TiO2 ceramic membrane in the separation of α-la and β-lg whey proteins

Abstract:
The purpose of this work was to evaluate the performance of nanocomposite ceramic membranes in separation of major whey proteins. For this, the nanocomposite ZrO2-TiO2 ceramic membrane was prepared. The succeeding steps to construct of the membrane were first making of α-alumina supports, second modification of supports surface via multi stages coating by submicron and nanometric α-alumina powders and finally coating ZrO2-TiO2 nanocomposite top-layer on the modified supports. The porosimetry results verified that pore size distribution in membrane top-layer was in nanometric scale and uniformity of membrane surface was confirmed by SEM micrograph. The membrane was tested by whey proteins isolated (WPI) solutions to evaluate the ability of prepared membrane for the proteins permeation. A high ideal selectivity for the separation of α-la and β-lg proteins with high quality was achieved at pH 8 for WPI solution.
