Effect of ionic liquids on gas separation properties of PU-based membranes

Nowadays, ionic liquids are applied for gas separation as green solvents with fantastic separation properties. In this study, ionic liquids (ILs) of [HNMP]+[CH3SO3-]-nand [HNMP]+[SHO4]- were applied to improve the separation properties of polyester urethane membranes. Polyurethane/IL biphasic membranes were prepared by sol-gel and casting method. The structure of the membranes were studied using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) and tensile tests. The synthesized polyurethane/IL membranes were experimented in a gas separation setup at different pressures of pure N2. The obtained results showed that the permeabilities increased with pressure. Introducing both of the ILs enhanced the N2 permeation through the membranes.
